    XM Bug Report

Ok, I got my XM unit and it appears to work... Here are the issues:
    1. Instability
Streetdeck seems to have a tough time interfacing with XM - When clicking on the xm button, it can lockup for a couple seconds which I suppose is really no big deal, but I find that Streetdeck has more fatal lockups as well since installing my XM (Where I have to hit ctrl-alt-del). When going back and forth between my music and xm Streetdeck seems to have some stability problems, but the lockups are not consistent, so I really can't pinpoint "when" or "why" this is happening. I think some of the sluggishness has to do with my connection to the satellite? I typically have two bars when my XM is "good"...would purchasing another antenna help any? I have also noticed the list sometimes disappears when I come back to it, or certain stations don't let me select them (I am guessing this all has to do with my connection?).

    2. Random Errors
Another weird thing that has been happening since the XM is that the speach recognition has been kicking in telling me that the command is not recognized, but this only happens occassionally (but sometimes when it does it, it is so persistent, Streetdeck has to be restarted) - It seems like Streetdeck gets confused and starts listening to the line in for voice commands (I don't have a mic installed)

    3. Music Navigation
Ever since I installed XM, the back button of the music control has been taking me to the beginning of the song instead of the previous song.

    4. XM Quality
The frequency response of XM is poor at best (no bass, a little of the "AM Radio effect", etc). I am going to guess on this one and say that this likely has to do with the soundcard - perhaps a better soundcard would be the solution for line in quality - I am just really nervous about installing a soundcard as I have had really bad experiences in the past with streetdeck and third party soundcards - anyone else had any luck?

Overall, I would say that the XM Radio is a nice feature add for Streetdeck and is alright the way it is, but I don't think it's at %100 in the development process..

I know this sounds a little all over the place, but that is kind of where this has been since I installed XM...

My thoughts... (sorry if not too much help)

    1. I think the issues are USB related, particularly on resume from standby. Some drivers take longer to restart and StreetDeck tries to open COM ports right away - I think they get deadlocked somehow.

XM used to be my number one complaint until I resorted to a standard serial cable (bought from some nice guy on this board who made one for himself plus 10 more). Now no issues with XM.

    2. That is weird. Streetdeck by default uses the spacebar to initiate voice recognition - you aren't sending it a space character using girder by any chance?

    3. I did not know you could rewind an XM song - cool! The gestures work as expected as do my radio controls so I never noticed this one.

    4. I have the SPDIF hack (again from someone on this board) on the XM Direct unit feeding to a SB Extigy. The sound quality is amazing. That said, the Extigy has some "issues" but in general is not a problem for me anymore. The good part about it is that even if the PC is off it can still function, routing signals from the stock HU into the AMP (so you can listen to the CD, AM/FM, etc).

    1. Are there any more of these standard serial cable mods (or wiring diagrams to make one?)

    2. I don't think so, however the keyboard I am using is wired and does get thrown around the car...

    3. No - start your xm then go to music and select a song (essentially deactivating xm) - hit forward through the next couple of songs - when you try to go back, it goes to the beginning of the song instead of the previous song.

    4. Nice (on the pc off function) - I'll have to check that routing functionality. What were your issues with the Extigy and how did you solve them? I installed a Sound Blaster (don't remember which one - one of the later ones I think) one time, and it bombed Streetdeck - the behaviour of the onboard soundcard with the PCI soundcard was baaad....

    Thx for the input..

There has been a few updates to the serial communication for XM in 1.0.4.5. If your using an XM direct, there will always be a couple second delay when starting XM while it sends the intialization and waits for a response.

If your voice recognition is going off, goto the keyboard settings and unmap all keys from voice recognition and see if that solves your problem.

The only time I have seen the back behavior you are talking about is if the previous song is unplayable. So the previous function, will do go to the previous song, won't be able to play it, then immedialy go back to the current song starting it over from the beginning. To verify this, go into windows media player, clear out your music index, then add only a few songs that you have verified all play, then startup Streetdeck and see if it solves your problem.

Where would I get my hands on such a device and what is the cost?

Same deal - where and how?

What other XM options are there besides XM Direct?

This behaviour is consistant and replicable... Maybe I just have a weird quirk - I suppose it doesn't help that I am using a weird driver for my XM that I borrowed from TimeTrax...

Ok, so now it is saying that the xm cannot connect - may be caused by disconnected cables... Let's do the serial thing - what's that all about and where can I find one... also, I just purchased the SB XFI - So once I get ahold of the spdif hack, we are going to try this puppy out - knowing my luck, my unit will probably fry :| And as an Electronic Technician turned Software Engineer, it makes me look a little stupid for having the most problems...

the XM serial cable cost me $10 shipped! what a deal, eh? You need to find the user that was selling it in the classified section. I do remember seeing a post on this site with the pinout diagram. The only tricky part is getting a hold of the connector that plugs into the XM Direct unit. The rest is just soldering the pins to the wires (correctly).

The only real problem with the Extigy is that if you unplug it or cut power while the PC is on, the PC crashes. It is a driver issue as it crashes every PC I tried it on. So I had to make sure that the Extigy was always powered while the PC was on. Not such a big deal there. The only other little complaint is that the SPDIF input does NOT show up in StreetDeck - do not know why??? It shows up in every other audio program and the standard windows mixer. So I cannot set the volume for that input line from within StreetDeck. Again no huge deal there as I set it outside SD using the windows mixer. Things like that bug me but I can live with it...

Thanks...I ended up getting the XFI PCI and struggled to get it to work, but after a day of messing with it, finally - success! I will try to find the user and maybe put the spdif on the wishlist for GOC to implement?

A audio input enumeration bug was fixed in 1.0.4.5. If SPDIF shows up in the windows mixer, it should show up in StreetDeck.
