can virtual earth be purchased or downloaded so we don't need to be online?

kinda hard to do that (broadband anyway) in a car driving around the country, eh?

or is there just waaaay too much data for a local pc to hold?

i saw the sdk could be downloaded but doubt that contains imagery...

No, it can't be purchased. The data is a couple of terrabytes so it wouldn't be practical anyway.

You can get an internet connection anywhere you can get cell phone access. I have yet to drive anywhere where my EVDO connection didn't get at least a marginal connection which is really all that is needed to download a few images. Cellular internet is still kinda pricy yet, but it works great for this purpose.

A number of new features that are going to be added to StreetDeck will require an internet connection too. This is just the first.

So you have an EVDO router in our car, SWEET! Is it connected to the PC through Ethernet or 802.11g and do you use the samsung phone or a card for WAN interface?

Yes. GOC and I both have a dedicated wireless Internet connections using the KR1 http://store.mp3car.com/ProductDetai...ctCode=COM-015 and a KPC650 EVDO card with Verizon's service connected via Ethernet to our car computers. Using the KR1's Wifi is also an option but I find if the computer is only 2 feet away and both are mounted permanently it’s more reliable to use Ethernet.

The KR1 is freaking great. Theres almost no setup of anything required, you just plug in your card and it connects and keeps the connection whenever it has power. The wifi is also great so on trips when I have a passenger I can give them my Fujitsu P1510D lifebook and let them go on the internet too just by bringing it into the car. Also whenever I need to update anything in the car from my laptop I just bring it out and they connect up.

I am also doing something of the same using the VZ PC5220 card. I am planning on getting a Soekris board (http://www.soekris.com/)..

PS: I tested the Virtual Earth using this card, worked flawlessly.. I kinda pre-cached the area by using the browse button and scrolling around, but even driving it kept up nicely..

Hmmm, wonder how well EDGE will work - not nearly as fast as EVDO... (but I have an unlimited data plan for $25/mo). Also do I have to actually be online before the button to activate Virtual Earth will appear?

No the button is always there. It will try to use the cached data even if there is not connection.
