    Question about SD and HORM

Under SD's "Shutdown Options" settings page there's and entry for "Auto Save Settings Every (For Instant Off HORM Support)" for which there are several time intervals selectable. SD's manual doesn't go into any detail on this setting, and a search for "HORM" in the SD forum produces zero results. So I was hoping that someone here could shed some light on to how this setting works in an EWF/HORM environment.

HORM would be the perfect option for me if it wern't for the fact that I have to enable EWF in order to use it (I use a hard drive, not a flash card). If I add something like MP3s using StreetDeck's import from USB function (a very nice and convenient function) the last thing I would want to have to do, let alone remember, is window out of SD and use the "ewfmgr c: -commitanddisable -live" and "ewfmgr c: -enable" commands, then reboot. Not exactly the most convenient method.

So I would like to know. Just how does SD "Auto Save Settings Every X minutes" with EWF running, without having to do a "commitanddisable", "enable", then reboot? Also, along with SD's settings, are files like MP3s also saved?

If you're wondering why I would like to go this route, here's how I would like my system to operate:

From sitting over night, I start my car, CarPC resumes to saved HORM state (faster than a cold boot) with no media files or XM channels playing.

Stop over at gas station/Pack-a-Sack/friend's house/whatever. CarPC goes into Standby.

If I get back and start my car within 2 hours, CarPC resumes from Standby. Super quick, and the last file/channel I was listening to resumes play.

If I get back and start my car after 2 hours, my M2-ATX cuts power to the 5v rail. CarPC will now resume to my saved HORM state (again, faster than a cold boot) with no media files/channels playing. By then I wouldn't care what I was listening to before anyways.

So, does anybody know if this is possible with SD?

StreetDeck doesn't use the registry to store any settings, everything that changes is stored in the StreetDeck application data path which defaults to My Documents\StreetDeck.

If you setup 2 partititions, 1 read only and 1 read and write and set the application data path to point to a folder on your write drive, then set StreetDeck to save at some interval. Saving may lock your computer up for up to 1 second every time it saves, depending on all the options that have changed and the speed of your computer, so you'll have to performance test what works best for you. You'll also have to set all your media paths to the write drive for them to be really useful.

Whenever you resume from hibernate, StreetDeck will automatically reload where it last saved at from disk regardless of the state it was in when it shutdown. Hibernate really doesnt save the state for StreetDeck, it actually clears everything before it goes to sleep then reloads it upon resume.

At this point HORM support is more theory then anything else, we have tested it and it should work, but it's never been installed or tested in a real car or for long term, but it was designed with it in mind.

Thank you Chuck for the rapid and detailed answer. It clears up a lot for me.

Based on what you've told me, I'm probably going to stick with just using normal hibernation for every shutdown. Resume times out of hibernation are currently not too bad for me, so I guess that if it isn't broken, then I shouldn't be trying to fix it.

I've also read somewhere on these forums that it's risky to have EWF enabled on one partition and not enabled on a second while using HORM, due to a possibility of the unprotected partition being corrupted.

Plus, my system isn't the fastest, so I'd probably end up with that pause you mentioned. It's running smooth the way it is, so I probably shouldn't touch.

Again, thanks for the answer, Chuck.
