    Road Trip Experience/Issues

I took a trip to Monterey, CA to play some golf and also watch the Champions tournament at Pebble Beach. I took this as a good trip to use SD through some navigation paces. Some of these issues are underlyin Mappoint problems, but some are SD 'caused'

    1. General routing to my hotel in Marina was good, although SD took me through a few streets in Salinas that were dubous as to being faster due to several lights on the route. Overall did a good job of prompting and getting me there.

    2. Routing to the golf course on Fort Ord that I was to play on was complicated by the fact that the route chosen required the unocking of a chain link gate on one of the roads that Mappoint assumed was now open after the closing of Fort Ord...there is still a gate there, however - locked! Clearly a Map Point issue.

    3. While in Monterey, I needed to find an ATM and chose to search by name for a Wells Fargo nearby. SD/Mappoint gave me a selection of Wells Fargos a few hundred miles away. No amount of searching with simply 'Wells' or 'Fargo' would find the local Wells Fargo in the city. I did find the bank by asking someone and when I got there, searching for 'ATMs' in the POI tab did indicate that I was a few yards away from a Wells Fargo ATM, but searching 'by name' would not find it. On the map, a POI is clearly labeled as 'Wells Fargo'. Perhaps something about only being able to enter in 'caps' letters in the name search is the problem or ???. I have seen this problem in other cases as well.

    4. Next to figure the best route to Pebble Beach Golf Course. Again, searching for 'PEBBLE BEACH' or 'PEBBLE' did not find the golf course. I know the area fairly well, and navigated the old fashion way (by memory), and once again when I arrived at the golf course, the map showed a Pebble Beach as expected.

    5. In the 'recent destinations' option of the navigation search screen, it appears that only searched for addresses are remembered (albeit scattered on different pages of the list) - not recent 'searched by name' places.

    6. Somewhere in the mix, I would like an ability to stop the car and place custom POI at the current lat/long with a simple push of a button. For instance, when staying at a hotel that is not in the database, I would like to be able to quickly register it as a POI so that when out and about I can then route back to the new POI quickly. There probably is some arcane way to do this, but I found that I wanted to do this a couple of times during the trip - either for a restaurant that I found or some other destination - like the parking lot for Pebble Beach, for instance...

Issues aside, Sd did a pretty good job of supporting the trip without a lot of hassles.

    7. Is there any way to 'preload' sat map images for a trip? I tried using the cell phone for capturing images, but my connection was lost and it was too tedious while driving to 'debug' the issues. I would have liked to be able to create a route while in my driveway at home, while connected via Wi-Fi and have SD pre-load the latest sat images in the background cache for the trip based on the route selected.

A few of these issues have been mentioned in the "what would you like added to SD" thread below, specifically points 6 and 7. HTH and hopefully if enough of us ask for it and it doesnt need too much codeing it might appear some time soon

3,4, 5. The POI interface has been recently enhanced in 1.0.5.5 and should solve these issues.

    6. In fullscreen navigation, click browse, click the area on the map where the POI you want to add is, then click the route button next to it, scroll down and find "add to favorites"

    7. Its technically possible, but at this point, it would create licensing issues.

Is the issue on preloading sat images one of saving the images or 'cacheing' them. As I understand, SD will cache images once you have actually traversed a route. If we could 'fly' the route only such that images were cached (as compared to saved in some form that could be redistributed), then perhaps the licensing terms can be appeased. I see no difference between cacheing a driven route vs. pre-cacheing an about to be driven route from a licensing perspective. The key is not allowing folks to resditribute the images, I believe.

Thanks for all of your answering of forum threads, btw, Chuck.

i live in ny and i am having lots of issues with navigation.
it sends way off. same street but, very far on buinding number.

it seems that streetdeck only work at intersetion, does not find or sends you way off house of building number ex. 2311 cornaga ave, 22xx newhaven ave etc.

    Chuck,

Is there an ETA for 1.0.5.5?

i think 5.5 should be out in a week. i asked the same Q a week ago and said 2 weeks it will be out. he said something about it being released after the Intel conference. so 5.5 should be a nice and juicy update

Man, you need to write properly if you expect the developer to be able to understand what your problem is.

    Chuck +1 ?

Cell phone sat images are cool but it would be better for most of us to cache the images at home with our broadband connections first. I agree here I beleive the licensing issue arrises if you download the cache from someone else and not from each user doing it alone. How hard would it be to write a third party app to do this chuck if you can maybe you can PM me on this if you don't want to directly do it.

    let me know thanks
