FAQ: Do-It-Yourself Startup/Shutdown Controllers

Ive looked on this site and couldnt find it, so If I'm posting an already done question, please lemme know and Ill delete....
Anyway,
Can you use this for a laptop? I would have to remove the battery and solder on the contacts for this from my opus? And speakin of opus, my laptop battery is 11.1V 4320mAh, which opus should I get? I dont know about this kind of electronics. I've also got a screen to consider and more than likely a few other add ons...Im thinking an 80 watt opus. But I dont know...

If you are using a laptop...then you are making it too hard on yourself. Go with a remote switch. There are several examples on this site. Here was the simple, quick and cheap one I did....link.

The latest modules I'm shipping out are sweet if I do say so myself. lol I actually built myself one of the newer ones. Though, I'm already looking at ways to improve it. :lol:

Since I'm not longer developing the DSSC startup/shutdown controller, I'm considering releasing it open source to the community. Would the newbies be able to use the schematics, code, etc?

If there's interest, I'll gladly give it back to the community...

I think it would go to good use :)

im interested in a seperate startup/ shutdown controller that will work with the dc-dc power suplies that dont have integrated startup/ shutdown controllers built into them. Product much like the one on the mp3 car site that doesn't have too good of reviews.

there are many ways to turn the pc on, im only interested in turning it off either with the ignition switch or the unused trunk open output channel from my keyless entry on my honda.
I already have a mini-box 200W dc-dc power supply.

seems there is a lot of grey areas where the many different ways of turning and shutting down the pc makes it hard to comprehend what works and what doesnt.

A DIY alternative for some maybe be the charge-controlled and latching circuits I have provided. These are merely connections using ordinary relays - no sensing or circuitry per se.
Then commercial devices like the ~$20 MW728 for low voltage shutdown or high-voltage connect. (They power another relay if 10A is not enough)

There should still be some basic figs on mp3car in my posts - not that I know quite where. (Yes - search!)
And not that I am up to date - I seem to be falling behind...

But I mention in case of interest, and if there is a demand for a compilation reply or thread with the simple building blocks and how they can be extended and mixed.

Timers may be required in some cases. (Again, I prefer counters or delay circuits added to plain normal relays.)
Graceful shutdowns using UPS functionality should be possible without timers.

in reality a 12v ups for car pc's would be the ticket. using a agm gell battery or lipo batteries, an integrated startup/ shutdown controller, and charger for the ups battery. then keep it isolated from the vehicals cranking battery.

till then. Seems the 555 timer is widely used. any circuits available using a 555 timer or other pre programed chips?

one problem i see with a startup/ shutdown controller with the ignition as the on off function is computer will boot if you turn key to on say to roll up power windows. then will have to fully boot just to shut down when you remove the key after power windows are rolled up.

any way to avoid this?
