So I have a question that is driving me nuts. I really want 5.1 in my car cause I have a sub and 4 speakers. But from what i have seen USB sound cards have issues and also tend to take up more cpu than a PCI card which is no good on a low power machine that needs all the cpu cycles it can get. Also as you know usb ports are like cold and taking up as few as possible is best. So this would lead me to install a PCI card. Only one problem, how do you fit it in a small case.

I have: http://store.mp3car.com/VoomPC_2_Car..._p/enc-008.htm and the board is: http://www.jetwaycomputer.com/J7F5M.html

All the cases don't seem to fit a PCI sound card.

If im not mistaken there is a PCI slot on the back. Its just turned sideways? If yes then you have to buy this. http://www.logicsupply.com/products/pci_106_l
I am not sure if it is compatible with your board though.

Another thing you could do is buy a different case: http://www.logicsupply.com/products/2699b

If you really want to keep the voom case, simply buy a risercard thats higher up and mod the case so the risercard sticks out the top of the case and mount the pci card that way. IMO its better to maybe just build a custom case.

Totally forgot about a riser (Hand > Face).

That would probably work. I may just go with another case. I love the voom case form factor and how there is the 2 usb and RCA on the front, but wish I could use the front RCA (Heard about issues cause the power supply is so close). The key is I am trying to fit it under my passenger seat so it has to be pretty small.

Anyway thanks for the suggestions, totally spaced on that one.

Seems like there is way more pros to using a PCI sound card though?

Most def better to go with a PCI based card. So many headaches will magically vanish once you do.

For all who are sick of the hiber problem of thie external usb device, try Windows 7 Home Basic.
I've spent my weekend on re-installing my CARPC on my laptop MSI PR200, and all bugs are gone when using the latest drivers from Creative website (Singapore)
No more hibernation problem, even the DVBT usb stick come back nomally when resume from hibernation under Windows 7.

    ^_^

Any updates on the bios post issue? 30 seconds is huge every time you turn on a car. Plus, I get this really bad ground loop sound when the x-fi is plugged in and windows has not started yet which makes me want to get rid of the card even though I'm happy with the flexibility and sound.

I tried out the Zalman 5.1 USB sound card which gets about 3x louder than the X-fi but it is VERY noisy - theres a very prominent hiss that comes out from it.

Any options in the Intel Bios to skio the USB check at bios post?

no, the only way around this issue is to get a different audio card, different motherboard, or deal with it...

i have tried disabling more bios settings then anyone should have back when i had a 945glc, and it still won't change the end result-- the issue is that the card is taking the time to get recognized--the motherboard is attempting got figure out what the soundcard is, and how to handle it as a input/output device..

I hope intel will come up with a bios update that can address this...
