Thread: Hardware Review: MoCoSo Lilliput EBY701 Transflective

A little while ago there was a discussion regarding the performance of transflective screens in which somebody recommended the modified Lilliputs by MoCoSo. Most people have only known of the MP3Car ones (which are usually sold out and fairly overpriced). Needless to say, when I was given the opportunity to test one out myself, I had to take it!

MoCoSo has a nice little line of sunlight readable screens, and the one Im testing is the Optically Bonded EBY701.

Monitor

This first picture is basically what you get in the package, along with an AC adapter. I received my monitor already assembled into a black double-din case ($75) and requested that I got to keep the old monitor assembly. By allowing MoCoSo to install your screen into the new assembly, you maintain your warranty and if anything happens, you're covered.


This is a picture of the screen installed into the assembly, the way you would receive it in a box.


This is the back of the assembly. If you'll notice, the PCB is screwed into plastic rails that hold the LCD into place and provide isolation for the electronics. MoCoSo also keeps the button board (at the top) and replaces the infrared sensor wires with thicker and longer ones. You also receive a new modified connector along with the original, just in case.


Pros

Well, the viewing on this thing is nothing short of spectacular. First off is a picture of the day outside when these photos were taken. I plugged the monitor into an outlet on my porch and attached my laptop to test it all out. The sun was bright and it was about 2:00PM local time. I was getting tanned by simply sitting there!


Here's the screen attached with the sun right above. If you look to the left at the window, you can see how gorgeous the day is and judging by the glare, how bright it is out! The monitor appears perfect in the brightest sunlight I could get!


This one's a little less focused, but you can see the sunlight barely washing away the bottom edge of the screen. That's about as bad as I could get it.


And here's the picture that says it all! If you look towards the left side of my laptop screen, you might be able to make out an icon or two but the glare takes right over the image! The exact same display on the transflective LCD appears perfectly and you can see my background very clearly. The contrast is still good too!


Cons

There was only one major downfall I found with this product, and it has nothing to do with the screen itself. It is about the mounting system in the double-din housing. It's hard to see in this picture (wasn't using my own camera), but pay attention to the mounting of the plastic "rails" I mentioned earlier. For some reason, the plastic rails bend slightly toward the back of the screen, and often times those little screws do not provide enough coverage to hold the plastic piece to the assembly. Because of this, the circuit board part falls off of the package and the LCD itself comes out too. These screws either need a small washer or a bit of glue to hold them on for good.


Overall
This screen is fantastic. I am 100% satisfied with the quality and the service that Chris from MoCoSo provided. The double-din installation, not so much.

Product: 10/10 - it works better than described.
Price: 7/10 - at $600 it crushes MP3Cars price, but still room for improvement.
Service: 10/10 - Chris was very helpful and knowledgeable.

Double-Din: 6/10 - The installation was great, but it should not be falling apart.
