In this reply, i use "I" alot, but i mean, that this is my feelings based on my usage and what i feel others may desire as well.

14 deg FOV its what the lens said. I may be mistaken, but put it this way what's on the screen is literally the area the camera blocks after 6 ft. I want to be able to see a larger chuck of the road, not just what's infront of the camera. I don't need long distance on this for night driving(i mean, when driving, i want to see what's infront of me and what i need to know about in the upcoming road), i just want the whole picture. Now, i'm doing a seperate project that involves a sniper scope. THat needs distance

    EDIT
To cllarify, the NVGs do exactly the same thing in terms of what it sees. However, the NVGs are designed to be riight infront of your eyes, making it inconsequential. If you move the NVGs to arms lenght, it has the same problem as the nite max. I don't know if you can get that though...

ok, most likely i missed something
i thought that, the fov being given by the lens, as distance increases it will catch more info in the picture, for instance, with a fov of 30 degrees, at 100feet it should have on screen the road+surroundings...hope it makes some sense what i said, sorry but english is not my natural language...also the figures are just examples, not real

i attached an ugly drawing to ilustrate my point better
i think having the cam at night with a large fov won t help very much because of no ir light from the headlights being projected on thesides of theroad near you where 120degrees will cover

i see and get your point, This is mine. The nitemax is a zero light capable imager. The IR works as a flash light and but it illuminates as a candle (wider spread). BUt, MOST IMPORTANTLY...the IR is an aid IF there's not enough light, NOT the primary light source. What i'm saying is this. On the road...you don't need the IR really, especially on city/ suburb streets. Sure it helps, but that's if there's not too much light period. On the highway, its a little bit more needed, but your headlights do the rest. Your headlight illuminate into view more than 40 degrees...more like, 100- 140 degrees..which si about beam the illumination the IRs provide as its just LEDs, not focused like a flashlight. Atleast these were my findings. someone refute me if i'm wrong, i don't like giving out bad advice...or retaining it.

EDIT: 120 degrees would give you massive fish eye...i really just want 60-90 maybe?

that's kind of what i was thinking...60-90 should do good....90 should be close to the natural fov, and a bit bellow will give us some zoom to it i'd think, we can see things in the immediate vecinity anyway, what we should be more interested for night time driving, is what s outside the light cast of the headlights, so, zoomin a bit won t do any harm, only good i would think
i do a lot of night driving, that s why i m so concerned on this
    thanks for all your input

See that was the other probelme that i had with the nitemax...the LCD is WAY too small (i have soe terrible vision and i got away with not needing to wear glasses to drive-go my awesome pre accident memory skills and visual interpretation ) I simply cannot see every much with the camera arms lenght away. Infact, with the nitemax's i'm thinking of getting some 7" TFTs in somme sun visors as my holoscreen based project was way to expensive to justify for the car i'm driving. Maybe a 06 G35, but not a 92 G20, so that was out. Anyways, yeah, will be using the RCA outputs on the CCDs and using the LCDs for other things.

@ Escalade182, well thanks, and a big thank you to Peoples!
