USB Syncroized 5V@8A power supply POL. Now Taking Orders!!!

I think the only way 12v regulated can be reliable is if it's stepped up first, then back down. then, even with 9v you'll still have 12v out, if not, then it's not very useful or dependable in a car environment, the 5v of course is fine without this..

10A for 5V

Not sure if any of us need that much juice, but if your setup need it, this is the only add-on (POL) that can handle that much.

Not mean to hijack the thread but I already a POL draw up for those who want a little experiment with the soldering iron (after I see you (OP) intended to make a 5A version).

You can build either 5V@5A, 12V@5A, or 5V+12V by using either regulator chip from Maxim or National Semi. The design had proven to work for years (base on my PSU or any old timers who use Mastero/Sproggy PSU.) Very simple to built and doesn't have all the goody from the OP's design. Critical part maybe hard to find.

Price point is a little steep compare to some other POL available from the forum's store like the carnetix or Opus. I know you and I can't get part any cheaper than those big guys to keep the price down. That is why I don't make one to sell

but as a leaning experience instead.

Well, I'm building up the next generation 10A, designed for 15A so it better be able to reliably push 10.

I'm selling one to spiro ,at a little higher cost since I cant get any volume discounts. Once he has installed he's going to post a review.

I finished construction of a chassis but haven't printed the stickers yet. I have designed all models to fit into the same chassis. so the picture below is a good representation of the final unit I'll be selling.

I'll have another post later this week with test data of the PSU I'm building for spiro. Now I'm working on the user manual, while I wait for the parts in the mail.

I know every laptop I had turned the USB's off when it went to standby. It should work.

When I said it should not be used as an input, I meant it should not be used as an input for the accps. driving other 12v loads is exactly what the 12V accessory output is meant for.

And yes you should still fuse the screen after the accps.

I shipped it just 30 min ago. he is going to install this weekend.

Testing went good last night, though I'm only happy with the output through 7.5A. I'm done redesigning this one. if anyone needs more than 7.5A of 5V, well you can buy 2.

the efficiency imroved too! now as high as 92%.

there was some high frequency noise on the output, but all at 300khz and above. well above audio range, and less than .1V when loaded. I should test my M2 just so you guys can see a comparison.

I built two last night, so I still have one. I want to do some more testing with it, and If I dont blow it up shorting pins together with test probes (like all the other test boards so far) I'll sell it to the most eager person for $100. sorry no group buy discount yet.

And yes, every test board has died by my clumbsy mistake, not because anything was underspec or the short circuit protection didn't work. the pins on those surface mount parts are way too close together.

I have updated the manual (a few posts up) with data i collected testing last night and a little more troubleshooting info that I learned from my install.

Oregon has a funny law that if the government doesnt use all the tax money they give some back, so I'll be recieving a kicker check in a few weeks. I may use that money to build the first 10, if I dont spend too much on xmas presents. If that happens sales will begin sometime early next year.
