I just dropped a load of money on the first run of 10. I ordered the parts and circuit boards just now.

A couple people have contacted me reserving one for thier system. PM or email me if you are interested.

I also ordered the parts and prototype circuit board for two ACPPSv2 (5&12V regulated).

For the next week, while I'm waiting on the parts I'll be building the chassis for the first run.

UPDATE 1/14/08

I built what I could over the weekend. Some of the components i ordered were on backorder with delivery expected ~1/23/08. 6 of 10 are complete but are untested as of yet. The other 4 should be available shortly after parts arive.

I painted the chassis last night but the paint requires 7 days to fully cure. I should be able to finish assembly next sunday on the 6 that are complete. Then they will be ready for delivery, slightly earier than expected.

I built 2 ACPPSv2 at the same time. They too are untested as of yet. I built them with subtle differences in parts to determine what makes them most stable and accurate. I should be able to test them soon. Once I am happy with thier performance they'll be available. It is possible they could be ready to ship by the end of February or mid March.

1/25/08...They’re Done!!!

I have finished the first run of 10 ACPPSv1 and the first run of USB Isolators. I am very pleased with how this all turned out. Most of the ACPPS were sold before construction was complete. The paint on the ACPPS looks good, especially since I’m not a painter. And the USB Isolators are smaller than I pictured in my head while I was designing them.

All the power supplies passed a 30 minute “burn in” outside their chassis, delivering 5A @ 5V to a 1 ohm resistor. They were checked for output voltage stability and operating temperature, to ensure everything is functioning correctly. Once assembled and in their chassis they were checked again for proper operation. All 10 passed with flying colors.

The USB Isolators were checked for shorts between wires before final assembly. I also performed USB flash memory speed tests using SiSoftware Sandra Lite XII.SP1 and actually showed a slight performance increase when the USB Isolator was being used (324ops/min with the Isolator, 319ops/min w/o). But those results are probably within the margin of accuracy. Never the less, the USB isolator does not impact USB2.0 performance. I would still suggest USB cable lengths are minimized when using it, since there may be some signal attenuation because of the extra connection.

In the next few days I will be writing a manual for the USB Isolator, but if you bought one with your ACPPS, here’s the skinny:

Plug the USB Isolator in at the computer, not after a hub.
The White/Grey wire is connected to the computers 5V USB supply. Use this as the enable signal for the ACPPS.
The Black wire is ground, connect it to the ground of the ACPPS. If your computers power supply is floating (not internally connected to ground) the ACPPS needs this as a reference to determine if the computer is on.
The Red wire is connected to the 5V line at the output of the USB Isolator. You can connect this to the ACPPS 5V output, or leave it unconnected. There is a diode with a ~0.15V drop between the input and output of the USB Isolator. Most USB devices will still operate if the 5V line is only 4.85V (they usually operate down to 4.5V).

If you power the red wire from the ACCPS output, it will not have a 0.5A current limit. So a hub after the USB Isolator *could* act like a powered hub (provide 0.5A to multiple ports) even if you are not providing it power through the barrel connector normally used to power it. Remember though, USB standard says there won’t be any more than 0.5A traveling through a cable, so the wires and connectors are spec’d as such. This application is purely experimental and I would suggest extreme caution if you plan to use the USB Isolator in this manner. I cannot test all possible hub/device/cable combination, so I’m not going to guarantee it will work, or your stuff wont break. This application is AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
