I have a question about the setup, you said they are 3' or 5' long for the newer ones, and that I should put the receiver up front, which works since thats where the antenna wire is.

So what I'm wondering is if my computer is in the trunk do I just get a RS232 extension cable or something so that I can connect it to my computer? Or is there something I'm missing/misunderstanding here. Thats pretty much the only thing keeping me from buying a cable and receiver at this point.

yes, tuner up front, and extend the minidin / or the rs232

you would need a 8 pin mini din extension, should have no problem finding them on ebay
or u can do it with a rs232 extension too.. dont matter

bottom line is, try not to extend the antenna wire of the car
and keep tuner away from RFI (aka the PC)

    Mitch,

I just hooked up my Visteon with the cable. I've been running it with the stock head unit for a while, and it's great. However currently it's not finding it on com port 1. I used the mac extender cable for it to reach (you suggested somewhere in these 70+ pages). Have you had anyone use one of these successfully? I'm afraid the signal might degrade too much over the 3 or 6ft that I extended it. I have it hooked up to power on when the key is turned on (the rem or acc signal from the ignition). Is this a problem? I see that you've suggested hooking it to a 12V from the computer - I don't see a difference since the computer will give 12v before the computer is fully booted but I'm curious if that makes a difference.

I was using an on screen keyboard, and I also see that might be a problem. I'm using Windows 7 and I've disabled it, but no go.

I'll try out the stock head unit again, and I guess I'll hook it up to another computer when I have a chance to further troubleshoot it, but I'm curious about the acc signal. I don't hear any clicking ever, however I can't get right up close to it because it's currently buried deep in the bowels of my car.

Related question, does anyone use their car 12V as the acc for their amps as well? Is there a benefit to this?

If the cable is correctly pinnout out, 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc... u can go prob 50 FEET
if u want it to RESUME from hibernation and such, the tuner must have power when the PC has power, so your wiring is wrong, but this has nothing to do with resume, it makes a hell of a difference on SHUTDOWN, the key goes off immediatly, but the pc is still shutting down, and wont be able to talk to the tuner.

could be a comport problem on ur pc... u dont even mention what is looking for it on com port 1

I agree. If you hook to auto 12V ACC, it will turn on right away, but when you turn off the car, the HD tuner will turn off right away which the PC will think it was disconnected and not hibernate correctly. Basically when you turn back on, the PC will go through the steps of having to recognize it again.

Never use COM one. When I first installed my devices I would have issues with them using COM 1-4, I had to renumber all of the devices. I left COM 3 and 4 the same (Amp Control, OBD2) but for HD and XM I had to put a weird number, so I put them on 20 and 21 and have never had an issue since.

On shutdown the tuner and computer lose contact with each other, and on resume they don't re-establish contact with each other, right? This is a limitation with the radio I'm assuming. Sorry if this has been discussed, I wish I had time to read through the entire thread.

The device is on com port 1. I've changed it to comport 10, and while your HD radio frontend software knows there's a device on comport 10 (or 1 if that's where it's located), it can't find it on auto or otherwise.

Thanks, I'll try a higher com port, but I did try 10 and it didn't seem to have an effect. That was after resuming from hibernation, bu that might not make a difference when trying to establish an initial connection.

That's what I'm using. Can you clarify what the issue is with powering off the hd radio while the computer is still on (ie using acc from the ignition to turn on/off the hd radio)?

Here's my scenario for daily use, as it's connected now.

    1. Car powers on, hd radio turns on immediately. Computer turns on within a minute or so. Cold boot.
    2. Front end (Centrafuse in my case) talks to the radio over serial. The radio responds, and I can control the radio.
    3. I have a pleasant and successful drive.
    4. I turn the car off. The hd radio immediately turns off. The car pc tries to get i/o from the serial connection, no response.

    ### This is the important step I guess, because what Centrafuse does here determines whether or not I can use the hd radio when I resume from hibernate###

The car goes into sleep/hibernation in about 10 minutes (using DSATX on Windows 7 OS)
    5. I get back into the car. The HD Radio turns on immediately. Windows resumes to its previous state of having no serial connection, but now it does.

So, at this point, is it up to the front end whether this is a problem or not? Or is it an issue inherent in serial connections? (I got my computer start long after serial was a commonly used io port).

Thanks in advance for any input.
