Still waiting on my cable, It shipped the next day, but taking longer to get here, as I ordered it during a holiday weekend :( so havent been able to test anything as of yet.
Does anybody know if it is possible to hook up both the HDRadio to the computer, as well as have the display connected somehow? It would be nice to be able to use the HDRadio with it's faceplate, when the PC was off for short trips to the store ect.
currently no, the serial cable plugs into the port you would plug the display into. I suppose a person could make a Y cable with some sort of switch to cut out the electronics in Mitch's serial cable. I don't really know. If anyone, Mitch would have the answer.
yes, it could be done.... but that display is SOOOOOOOO ugly
it would take some electronics to do it... so its as simple as splicing cables :)
i wouldnt spend any time trying it :)
care to um elaborate on that lol. Does it require just wiring or does it require some type of switch as well.

It would probably require some sort of switch, like a KVM switch for monitor, keyboard mouse kinda thing. I am sure if they were simply spliced, they would interfere with each other, or possibly even short something out!
The cheap way, and probably a lot of work, would be to use 8 micro relays, one for each wire. When the power was applied to the relays, the computer would be connected, when relays were powered off, the external screen would be connected kinda thing.
Heck a Fusion Brain could then be used to switch back and forth with a press of a button on the screen hahha.
It probably could be done fairly simply. The plugs are just PS2 plugs, and there are plenty of places to dig up old mice to rip apart :)
Just ordered my cable from your site mitch, looking forward to some HD in the car, finally a good sounding AM FM unit.
My email is joe dot shock at gmail dot com
I think I am going to buy the visteon tuner from ebay for $120, merry xmas :)
I will also be designing/coding a HD skin for my shock series RR skin.
you would have to electrically "merge" the RS232 signals
remember rs232 has a negative swing
basicly u have TX from the pc, and TX from the display, both need to go to RX on the tuner
my 1st thought would be to bring em to ttl
course there could be collisions...and then the message would be lost
u could buffer the data... course now u got a microcontroller, and ram involed
u could also use ur pc... one comport the tuner, the other the controller
and pass data...
now u got to code ;)
I agree, ditch the fugly controller and pipe that signal straight to the serial port of a PC.
I finally got my HD Radio installed in the car. It sound OK, better than the Silabs but it just doesn't sound right at times. MP3s sound somewhat better than the radio. How bad is the distortion that's been mentioned? What does it sound like? I'll probably pull it out again this weekend and ground the RCAs.
ground the RCAs!!!
just take a jumper wire for now, and listen!
shield to gnd(black) on the power connector
