If you want USB, you might as well buy the box from the TTL place.Originally Posted by tj!2k4

Ooops I guess I didn't see that part.
If you want a mechanical mute, you can add a switch across the Data line to Ground.
You could always buy whatever serial interface someone makes and then buy a USB to Serial converter.
Wow, am I ever glad I happened to browse this topic!
What I have always wanted is a symbol showing the reletive position (based on signal strength) with the Radar type as the symbol...
Like a fighter plane radar warning receiver.
Look in the upper right corner of some of these pictures.
.. or police cruisers as the symbol.. and on max signal strength the lights start flashing..![]()

What would be really wild would be if you could interface it with whatever nav software and approximate where they may lie in wait..

Well, after taking Jim's latest fixes to the design and putting them in place, I'm able to report that my interface still doesn't work
I actually started over fresh and decided to try my hand at etching a double-sided board. It came out better than I had expected, since all the traces were done freehand. I tested each track to make sure there were no breaks. SoftwareOne still "sees" my interface, but won't display the current mode or anything. If I disconnect it from the serial port, S1 will then let me know with an error that the interface is not connected.
So at this point in time, I'm just perplexed as to why it's not working for me. I can't help but think that maybe the system configuration is too different from Jim's (mainly motherboard and touchscreen). I think tomorrow I'll try pulling my V1 into the house and see if it'll run on my workstation.
I've attached pics of the new interface. Maybe Jim can spot an error or something in my assembly-work.
BTW -- Added a jumper (on topside) to complete the 3.6K resistor loop for those without the concealed display.
EDIT: Jim, does the cap need to specifically be polarized? I've got a 1uF 50V non-polarized and that's the only variance I can think of from the components you've chosen.
Wow that's clean. Too bad it's still not working. =(
