Thread: Production Double-Din VGA Touchscreen in the making!

Another CAD file update. Take a look!

FYI: I didn't realize this when I was rendering these images, but I forgot to turn some of the features back on. For example the USB port is gone, and some of the fillets (rounding of edges) are gone. In addition, none of the external mounting holes are in the sheet metal.

The rotary knob will be 1/2" wide. I'm considering these:

I need to figure out the size, spacing and order of the holes that I need to put into the design to match the typical 2DIN mounting brackets found today. If anyone has specific details on the measurement and spacing for the 2DIN (or even 1DIN) mounting holes, please let me know!

Anywho, here's a snapshot of the case as it's coming along now!

I am working on a project very similar to this one. Your front bezel looks great. One suggestion, the buttons on the left are quite large. Maybe cut them in half, horizontally... and presto more room for buttons. Plus, the shape of the buttons would be more uniform with the wording or label on the button.

I decided not to do this because the buttons are pretty small as is. The main concept for these buttons is to be easily accessible to the user without much effort. The buttons are .375" tall by .390" wide right now. Draw that on a piece of paper and compare it to the size of your finger to get a good idea. Smaller wouldn't be as good, IMO.

In addition, wouldn't six buttons (and a rotary encoder) be enough? Don't get me wrong, the more the merrier, but six should suffice for the major uses. Most of the other buttons or commands will be on the touchscreen itself. The six are just shortcuts. Maybe Menu, Radio, Music, SAT, XM, Phone or similar would do the trick.

This reminds me, I would like input from everyone as to what button names are priority or useful to you. Here's a starter list:

Menu, Radio, Music, Phone, XM, SAT, Sirius, Web, DVD, Video, Camera, PC I/O, PC Reset, the different play arrows like: "<<", "<", "|>", ">>", "||" etc... Anything else? Give me some suggestions.

Would be cool if it came with multiple buttons so we can choose and put them on ourself, anyways I'd prob want Menu, Music, Video, Phone, Nav & Net(Web) for me, play pause and next would normally be on the screen anyways

Hey Brett,

I'm new to this whole carputer thing. I for one am not willing to go cuttin up my dash, plus one of our cars is a lease, can't go cuttin that thing up.

But, I'm with you on the button size, sounds like a good fit to me. I may have missed it but did you say what size screen your going to use? And what is the brightness of it? Is your unit a standard double-din size? We want more pictures?

Oh, I found this site, http://www.dashboarddevices.com if it's yours it looks great. Do you know when you will have them complete to sell and what cost do you think?

Go back and read the previous posts, he said the screen size 6.5, and what din it is going (double)to be and no that site is not his.

that would be sweet, now its too big to be on the display, but to mod that into the dash next to it would look cool maybe someday years later buttons on a lot of things will be like that

or this could almost fit thatd be sweet, it will happen in the years to come
