Nuts, another setback. And a big one at that. Maybe funding in the new year means back to work on the project when that happens. Which probably means a beta product might not surface by next spring. I so wanted to have this product work. It was supposed to be the solution to the other failed attempt of a similar product. Based on the intermittent viewing of this thread from the beginning, a logical person would assume that a proven product will not hit the streets til next summer, maybe. That would mean my CarPC will have waited 2 years for a double din solution. In my mind, to be successfull, a company cannot take that long to produce a proven product.
Regardless, my go / no go deadline is this winter while my car is stored and gets it's interior facelift. If Brett comes through, great, if not, alternate solutions will be entertained/implimented.
Sorry Brett, but I'm affraid you can't expect everyone to hang on for as long as they have already and still have a big question mark as a forecast.
Oh well, I'm open to other options that come close to Brett's CT650.

LMAO, who is going to pay $1000 for this!!!!!!! Its cool and all and I wanted one up untill I seen the price!!! You can buy a complete 2 din carputer system for around the same price, and that includes all the PC parts. I would buy this for $400.

Ya know.... I think I'm w/ tech180 on this one.. Why would *anyone* spend money on this?

I need a double din carputer system w/ all the pc parts for the wife's car. If I can get all that for $1000 then by george, I need it NOW.
Hey tech180, can you post the link to that device please?

You were being sarcastic, right? I don't think you're going to see him produce such a beast for 1k.
Then there's the mp3car store with the 2k+ one.

Agreed, but hey, if he *can* then show me the link and I'd be happy to take a look and do a line by line comparison.

And for the record, see my post about 7 or 8 posts up. I think I made my case pretty well there.

    Peace.

You can easely buy Xenarc MDT-X7000 for $700 - DVI capable, but 1din unit.
And since whole point of this topic is 2din unit - you can find something like CID650 for $300 - $400.

For 1200 euro you can get complete 2din system from cartft.com. It includes everything, even WinXP license. And it's european price, I bet you can find similar system for $1500 in US (or even lower).

So, unfortunately, this product looks overiced. I can understand, where this price came from (producing anything in small batches can't be cheap), but it can't compete on the market - in it current state.

    0) It's not exist yet on the market. But, let's assume it's working fine and we can buy it.
    1) No DVI input (not real showstoper, but could be nice)
    2) It's ugly like hell
    3) No keypad backlight (with ajustable color - so i don't need to open unit and replace LEDs to match color with rest of the car)
    3) Price - way too high

What is interesting for me - open frame version of 6.5" LCD with DVI/D-SUB input plus separate logic board for USB keypad (without buttons, just board with bunch of connectors). I'd pay for that up to $600, probably.

Agreed, you made a very valid unbiased comment that I think most people would share. I know I do.
It's unfortunate that this project didn't fly. But I do see other more established companies making headway to this regard, so perhaps something may surface in a year or so.

For myself, I've opted to have one of the members here (blk02si) take all of my components and install them into his homemade double din case.

The big thing I am looking for is a double din touch screen monitor with support for 2 video in that has an open slot dvd drive (no moving parts). Just that alone I would pay for cause there is nothing on the market like that. There is one full double din pc: http://www.azentekonline.com/cms/content/view/13/47/
that i know of like that, but it is running vista and has specs that seem like a bit of a power hog compared to what I have build or would want. Plus I like building my own. Oh and it is like $2,000 or something ridiculous. Just wish there was a monitor out there like that.

    Two points:

#1, Considering the amount of work, effort, hardship, etc, (This thread is 37 pages long and this is going on for over a year that we know of) these guys have been through, I remember being taught that if I didn't have anything nice to say, maybe I shouldn't say anything at all. Perhaps you could try to remember this next time. You are, of course, entitled to an opinion, just maybe next time don't be so crass about it.

#2, Fabrication costs aside, once you've bought a *good* screen & PS (no $180 fleabay Lilliputs!), half height DVD drive, soft buttons & controller, double din mounting kit, cables, etc. I think you're not that shy of the cost of this unit. Rough estimate in my head for the above is probably $6-700 plus the extra time to wire it all up (it's all PnP in *this* unit).

Now how about the space requirements? Once you put the screen in the radio hole, where does the DVD drive go? Soft buttons? How do you keep it looking stock? Ok, lets say you can achieve that in your particular install, now how about adding in the fabrication costs? See how close to that $1000 mark we're getting?

This would be a one-stop, one-piece solution, for double din, no fab/mod usage. Yes it carries a price premium. Most niche solutions do. And by my math, it's not THAT much premium over the alternative and a lot easier to use. afai am concerned, this is a pretty decent value proposition. Try crunching the numbers and see for yourself.

Sure this isn't for *everybody* but for some (probably/hopefully many) this would be a great solution. Think leases, ppl w/ little to no fab experience, ppl who want to look 'factory' or stock to minimize theft risk, WAF (wife approval factor), etc.

And just for the record, I'm not a candidate for the product, nor do I have any vested interests. I'm just a watcher of the thread because think it was a ballsy move these guys made in trying to engineer this product (they took a dream and tried to make it a reality. More than I think most ppl can say for themselves) and I hope things work out well for them. Best of luck to you guys. I hope you get your financing and this puppy takes off. Win, lose or draw, you guys should be proud.
