back in 1997 scientists were getting over 10Gb/s using photonics...and the distance between the repeaters is roughly the same with photonics if i remember correctly (dont quote me)...there are a lot of things that the world has as far as technology goes, its just not released to the public.

for example...Verizon FIOS...Verizon has the capability to unlock the restrictions on their FIOS lines to get much faster than the 200MB/s that they are giving currently to businesses...they are using that to their advantage so when someone comes up with something faster, they will just unlock it a little bit more for a cheaper price to keep the edge...its how businesses work...

besides...i dont know of any hard drive (even in RAID 0 or RAID 5 configuration) that can write 40GB in 2 seconds...so its technically not even necessary at this time...
