For those of you driving in from further away, I just got these TIPS FOR DRIVING IN THE DC AREA. (abbreviated)
1. All directions start with "The Beltway"... which has no beginning and no end, just one continuous loop that locals believe is somehow clarified by an "inner" and "outer loop" designation. This makes no sense to ANYONE outside the area.
2. Rush hour is from 5 to 11 AM and 1 to 8PM, except during summer on Route 50, when Friday's rush hour begins at 10pm on Thursday night. Your best bet is to sneak in between rush hour traffic jams and the after-rush-hour construction traffic jams that extend well past midnight.
3. Many roads mysteriously change their names as you cross intersections. No one knows why.
5. Rain causes an immediate 30 point drop of IQ in drivers - snow is 50 points. Snow also causes a rush to buy toilet paper and milk.
6. The far left lanes on all Maryland interstates are reserved for drivers who wish to talk on their cell phones. The passing lanes are the far right lane, the "merge" or "exit" lane or whichever lane is ending the soonest. A good rule-of-thumb is the passing lane is usually marked with orange barrels, cones or sometimes flares.
