I think i've answered my own question, the relay is there to allow for isolation of the carpc via the kill switch, if i take the feed from the acc on the ignition AND use the startup/shutdown facilities it will turn on and off with the ignition, if i'm going on short journeys or just switching the ign on and off i can flick the switch to isolate the carpc.
