I had the same problem. You can use GPSGate which will create a virtual com port and filter the incoming data to 4800 baud. There is no advantage for having the higher baud so I don't know why they did it.

The nice thing about GPS gate is that it can duplicate the information and send it to another real or virtual com port. I have it going to my Bluetooth dongle to send the GPS feed to my PDA phone so that I can check on traffic. I won't digress again into the fact that the SD traffic mod probably will never be released.
