What is the downside to playing music via this magic 5.1 setup. Do the front and rear channels still get full frequency range or is is some kind of emulated surround sound? Hope this question makes some sense! I dont watch DVD's in the car very often...

Thanks! I don't think there is a downside at all, however 99% of the time there will be software conversion done to bring media from 2 channels to 4, or 4 channels to 2. All music that I know if is recorded in 2 channel so no matter what kind of system you have, it's still 2 channels. Most systems will use software to convert it into 5 channels or more but it's still only recorded in 2 channels. Or vice versa, if you manage to find media like a DVD that's recorded in 5 channels, play it on the computer and get the drivers working properly to output all 5 channels, run all separate wires, into a 5 channel amp and then out to the corresponding speakers, only then you'll have all 5 true channels. Otherwise it's going to get converted somewhere to 2 channel. So basically what I'm saying is that it's 2 channel anyway so don't worry about it. Just get a 4 channel amp that'll split the sound up for you.
