I'm still working on getting my CarPC finished but soon I'll start on my project for wheel controls.
I have a 2000 Trans Am, so it has the classic resistor ladder, (very common for GMs) it should only take a bit of coding to get a Pic Microcontroller to read the resistance and send it as a byte or two to the serial port on the PC. Then a program running on the pc will catch the signal from the port and emulate a keyboard press. All you’ll have to do is click ‘learn’ press a button on the wheel then assign a key-combo to it (Ctrl+P, Alt+Tab, F11, whatever!) When I get done I’ll make the software and hardware available in some form or another.
