I mounted the docking station for my IBM R51 onto a board and placed the whole contraption into a padded plastic gun case. This holds the laptop securely in place and protects the whole shebang from damage in my trunk.
I have never had a problem in the heat, as I trimmed the soft foam from the sides to allow airflow. And the IBMs work fine in the cold. Been around 0 F here and no problems. The IBM also come with software to park the drive when it gets shaken too hard. Rarely if ever happens while I am driving, unless I hit a BIG bump.
