Anyway i noticed that the red/white sub output cables have another small wire running the along them that I had ignored before now. I assumed it was something to do with grounding and I ignored it.
Its a very thin piece of wire, can I used this to send the ACC signal to the sub to switch it on or off?

Thats exactly what it is for. It is the remote switch wire that turns on your amp. I put a thicker wire to do that, but what you have will work.
It connects to the amp and then on the receiver it connects to the blue wire with the white line on it. Then youre good to go!
