Havn't used any of the older ccfl screens, but I can say that after being on for about 30minutes there is zero heat anywhere on the screen or in its direct vicinity. LED's give off so little heat, so I'm sure it was part of their strategy
Not all of the 2008 screens came with LED. The EBY701 all still use CCFL.
