I have a lot of input redundancy: Touchscreen, wireless remote(with its own mouse control) velcroed to the dash, voice commands, touchpad, and a keyboard. Most of the time I use an X10 MouseRemote for basic tasks ie: play/pause, next/prev track, and volume. The touchscreen is used more often for interacting with the GPS and browsing music. At night, I turn off my touchscreen off and use a combination of remote control and voice commands. If I had to choose between a touch screen and a remote, I would pick the remote.
If the buttons on your interface are big enough with dead space between them, you can use a touchscreen without looking at it. You could also look into mouse gestures.
