Actually, it's almost a known fact that large projects benefit more from following an open source model than do large monolithic corporations.
The distributed model allows open source projects to release far more often than commercial projects. That's why ubuntu can release a brand spanking, bleeding edge version every 6 months, and the kernel can release a new subversion every 3 months. In contrast, it took microsoft 5 years??? to release a new version of their Windows operating system.
However, you are right that things *can* get complex to manage. But only if you don't do it right
