The Fusion Brain is a neat tech way to go, but it means your computer has to be operating even for the shortest trips, just to kick in the a/c. In Florida, I want that a/c going the instant I'm in the car, and I imagine New Mexico is similar -- although not quite as humid.

If they're standard push-pull cables, you might check at the auto parts store and see if they have an application that uses longer ones. Full-size pickups use way long cables for that. Auto boneyards might have 'em really cheap, but the price difference may not be worth having a used one fail too soon. And it's hot out there in the boneyard, too.
