This is not pointless. This would work very well if implemented properly. You would still use the hard drive with a boot sector that loads the RAM drive and also the image for the RAM drive (your OS). You could still store all you music, maps, ect on the hard drive.
Theoretically (because I have not yet tried) you can simply put the computer in standby and the OS will not require a "reload" from disk.
I cannot even start to explain how much faster this is during operation.
I don't know how tolerable the OS load time from cold boot will be.
