I listed it as a 2N2222 commonly available at just about any RadioShack... But!... I am gonna actually work on something a little more power tollerant.. You can try this for very little $$... should actually be less than a buck... but it would be alot better if you had a opto-isolator between the Transistor and Carputer... and also I am gonna look for a cheap source for a more suitable Transistor.. I still have not gotten to test this myself as I have not had the time..
I will soon if no one else does since i have a few hundred General purpose 2222 transistors....
but you pretty much hit the nail on the head...

**EDIT** Thinking about it.. It would be more practical and safer for the equipment to use the transistor to trip a relay rated at around 1amp.. although the above should work fine I think I might go with a relay design...
I will make a diagram unless someone beats me to it later tonight when I get home..
