actually, you *NEED* to mount it vertically. once good hard bump on the harddisk from a speed bump or pothole can take out a partion, some data, or the whole drive. I learned my lesson the hard way and always mount the harddrive on its side.

as always, make sure you have backups of your data, esp with that large of a drive.
