What I was thinking was I have Wi-FI in the car, and I can usually get a descent signal within the city limits, at most major intersections. So why not record the data, and then should the thief drive by a hotspot, while stealing the car, you'd at least know where he was, and which direction he was last headded in... to report it to the police... and you could setup a server, at home that would recieve and log these results, and you'd ignore them as long as the car was in your posession, but send them to the poilce should you find your ride stolen in the moring, after work, lunch, etc.... Costs $0 and is do-able with the equipment I have now... the only issue is to run a serial splitting programm so that I could run the logger and Routis at the same time....
