I use the desktop version of carcare from
http://www.carcaresoftware.com/ (30 day trial)
It is for managing mutiple vehicles, but I just track the vehicle that it is installed in. Obviously it is a manual data entry setup. Every time I fill up I enter current odometer, gallons and total cost. All other values are defaults or calculated from previous entries. It has alot of features I don't use and the interface is not great for incar use, but it is functional. I have a complete fuel and maintenance record on my 04 dakota bought new. I have been tracking my 02 F-350 starting maintenance at 26k and fuel at 100k and I am now at 130k. The information is in a database that I backup to a flash card incase the HD fails.
It would be great if the software you create can import and export a standard data format so that information can be tracked for years on different programs and versions. Check out carcare for ideas on what is important.
