If you go that route using the Y adapters, all you would need is 2 of those if you were to hook it up to a 4 ch amp. Each Y adapter produces 2 channels, i.e. front left and right. Most 5.1 sound cards only have 3 3.5mm stereo jacks where it has fronts left and right, rear left and right, and the last one has the center channel and the subwoofer channel. Most people go this route because of the inexpensive cost of using standard car amplifiers.

Your other option is to get an expensive digital amplifier that accepts optical or spdif inputs, which most 5.1 sound cards are equipt with. This method would give you better sound quailty and would eliminate the "pop" most people experiance when the computer audio is turnned on after the amplifiers had already been turned on.

There may be other methods, but these would be the most popular...
