any linux distro can be stripped down to a bare min. You can even make redhat install to like 150 megs. Also any linux distro you can make into a gui system. For the fastest startup I'd only run a window manager like fluxbox or blackbox as your gui. Stay away from kde and gnome as they are complete desktop enviroments. You can really make the linux bootup fly if you disable a lot of un-needed services. The big one on redhat is kudzu. Really your choice is to run whatever distro you feel comfy with. I'm a big time linux user but i use windows on my carpc. crashing is never really a factor and bootup is good for xp around 35 seconds. One reason crashing isn't a factor is cause i'm not loading a lot of random programs.
