Need some help with mounting drive as read-only

I know that some writes have to happen on the boot, but how do I mount the drive as read only so I can shut if off without worrying about data loss?

I'm running the current version of Damn Small Linux. It's based off of Knoppix/Debian. I think it's kernel v. is 2.4, I don't know if that matters or not.

Bottom line is I don't know jack about linux, and I can't find any good info on what to do exactly. Most everything I googled expected me to know something about linux. I know jack. If someone could point me in the right direction, that'd would be most awesome. I'm trying to learn...
