While the FAQ suggests connecting the XM Direct unit to 'clean' regulated power, this is NOT a requirement. The XM Direct boxes are designed to run off dirty 12v from any source in the car.
If you can run it regulated, then great, it'll probably help with any potential noise problems, but it's not absolutely neccesary.
