Just to clear all you questions (in case you didn't read my first post)
Do not use a IDE adapter go with the enclosure (usb from ebay or firewire/usb from mp3car)

In this last pic you see the PCB in two parts, that is because the working one is in the car and this got burned
Actually I really like that solution and would love something as simple as that.
Now, how do I semi flush-mount the drive to an ABS plastic face piece that will be attached to my centre consol from behind. It appears from that pic that drive sits all the way in with the small lip of the drive flush against the outside edge of the enclosure - right?
