but, in theory, if its gonna have shock problems, it'd be worst on horizontal no? then gravity's at its strongest with the arm and head being farthest its mounting point

The oil in the ball bearings is going to give into gravity and move down to one side of the drive when it's turned off. I'm not saying it's going to cause your HDD to crash, it's just one of the theoretical negatives of mounting a drive vertically.
