For the bluetooth phone stuff, wouldn't it be better to put together some apple voice recognition stuff in the background to dial people's numbers.... If you've already got a headset on, it could be as simple as "Computer, call Dave" or "Computer, call 411"

Voice recognition (listening for pre-defined words) is easy to implement in Cocoa, works fine in a quiet environment, but not really so in the car. The results with a handsfree-set microphone on the steering column were really poor. A headset was better, but not very convenient.

Hey guys!

Just wanted to give you an update on whats going on in the world of AMP. I've been working on a little "importer." So, basically, you can stick a little USB flash drive (jump drive), external harddrive, or whatever else onto your computer and run a module in AMP, and it will copy all of the files from the "source" into your local iTunes library, and then you can just run the AMP importer and the songs will be available.

This prevents you from having to load Finder, etc, to add songs. The importer is short, sweet, simple, and efficient. It's also, I suppose, the first official "module" for AMP. I'll include it's source code in the next source code release.

I've also been cleaning up AMP's source code a bit, making some **** "better." Also, I've been toying around with a new idea for the "movie" view. .. Optional of course. It's like the "Album view" for songs, but for movies. So, it will show like a DVD case or whatever for your movies. You can either include a certain file for it to use, or it can just grab a frame from the movie. It's still just an idea. Curious what yall think about this?

Oh, and the bad news. So I'm studying for a micro exam for Monday. Bang bang at my door. I think it's my neighbors.. "Hello?" And it's my fiance. Wow. Are you f-ing kidding? GTFO!

hahaha you didn't let her in the door did you? tell her to call you later after your done with exams, coding and life in that order

great ideas on the movie view. may I suggest having the importer trigger amp to reload your itunes library?, since you'll have to any way? or make that a checkable option to do that... that way it's one step easier...

I also like the idea of the movie view... Kind of like frontrow view of movie trailers. I am also loving the idea of the "module" of plugging in a thumb drive and it loading into AMP. Will this work with photos and movies as well?

Hmmm. I hadn't thought of that. But yes, that's a good idea, and it should do that. Looks like I have more work ahead of me!

Haha :-)

I spent most of today going over all this crap for tomorrow's exam. I've got a ****load over the next 2 weeks. Then I have a week or so off, then bust *** for finals. I may or may not have said it before. I'm in 3rd semester right now, which is the "killer" semester at my school. Supposedly next semester I'm supposed to be surprised at all the free time I'll have.

So AMP updates may be a little "slow" over the next few weeks, but I'm still always working on it. I've spent this evening working a little more on the importer. So far it will let you copy music and movies to the appropriate places. I've just got 1 tiny thing to do to complete it for photos (letting you select which album to import them into, and then find an AppleScript that handles that -- if anyone knows of an AppleScript that lets you specifiy a photo, and which album to import it into, it would be a great help.)

I think this importer will be one of the most important things for using AMP in a car. You can import from *any* source. You could burn a DVD full of songs, movies, or photos. Or you could have a network drive connected, an external drive, a "flash" drive, etc. Anything. And then you just import it into the right place. The only "stipulation" is that for music, it needs to already be properly tagged (unless you want to tag it manually on your in-car Mac.)

I'm enjoying developing the importer as a "plug-in." I'm finding it pleasant to be working on a tiny project again

I've finished the "random" code for AMP. I'm sure there's a bug or so in there somewhere, so I probably should get it uploaded so you guys can test it out. I'm also still playing around with AMP's code, optimizing it and trying to make it a little "smaller." I'd love to try to get all the bugs ironed out of the main module.

After that, I'd like to get a list of some of the most requested features, and see which ones should be modules, and which ones (hopefully few) should be incorporated into the primary "module" (I hesitate to call it that!)

Also, I see people talking about BluePhoneElite. What is it? What is it capable of? And what do people expect of it once integrated into a front-end? Is it just a bluetooth phone dialer? Or can it do more?

And, I guess I may as well ask What features are still being waited on for AMP? (Please don't mention 800x600! I still need a picture of AMP on a Xenarc in 800x600!)

I'd like to see war-driving and GPS in AMP...

I might be moving to Texas and could use a GPS in my car!

So I played around with the amp source all weekend and it was really fun playing with cocoa and getting different things working.

Some things I added.
  • Progress bars on the import screens.
  • Hotkeys for the griffin powermate (pressing option-P plays/pauses, option left/right go to previous/next song, i couldn't get space bar to play/pause like in itunes )
  • Modified the album view to group albums just by name - if there are multiple artists show the artist under the album art as eg "12 artists" - clicking into an album with multiple artists allows you to pick the songs by individual artists for that album name or all songs by all artists for that album name.
  • Modified the artist view to include an ALL option - clicking that will list all songs in the database. clicking on an artist and clicking the ALL option will list all songs by that artist across multiple albums.

I'll comment some of the stuff I did in the code and post it tonight or tomorrow, but there were some fundamental changes in the coredatamodel and the importitunesxml method (and other bits and pieces in appdelegate).

I changed the coredatamodel so that it was 2NF, this allowed me to implement the last two points. Basically it removed the artist->album->song chain and replaced it with intertwining relationships.

Is there a program for os x to do code merges? it's not going to be fun reconciling changes from different people all the time. the two things that would help this the most are: a cvs/svn server to track changes and versions by multiple people and splitting up amp_appdelegate into many different files.

Hey there

Interesting sounding changes. I don't know how you should post your code. I don't like the idea of different versions of AMP floating around all being branded as AMP. I'd like to stay in charge of the "official" releases or whatever (at least until I disappear from the internet, lol!)

I'm interested in seeing your updated .xcoredatamodel!
