what do you think?
I think that's a really cool idea I'll have to figure the best way to check for an internet connection.
I agree with you also about moving the options, and making the list bigger, etc. The one thing that sucks about the whole war driving thing with a mac, is that in my experience the WiFi antennaes *suck*. I bring my powerbook to class, and my friends can pickup networks on their dells (some with the PCMCIA cards that give them so much more range) that I can't see. I had an old iBook also with the same problem, as did a neighbor too.
But I still like this little wardriving thing

Ok, I'm stopping for the evening
This is what I've ended up with:
Main screen:
Config screen:
Everything works... It sorts the networks based on their signal strength, and autojoins the strongest network.. It refreshes every few seconds, etc...
The only thing I really need to do is make a little graphic for the signal strenght in the bottom part of the screen.. For the list up top, I'm going to keep the numbers.. That weird xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx number is the MAC address. I figured the geeks out there would like that. Any input/ideas/comments?

Actually, I can use some feedback from you guys on the WarDriver:
http://www.aychamo.com/amp/AMP_WarDriving.zip
You can just run this executable. It should do the basics. Please remember it's built for a touchscreen interface, and I've never done WarDriving or whatever before So please feel free to tell me what it needs, where it sucks, or whatever else!!
Once it seems bugfree or whatever, I'll build it into AMP off the main utils screen (in place of Calculator).
One thing I noticed, is I can join wireless networks, and it shows that the internet is accessible, but.. its one of those things where you have to pay. But it still shows the internet. I can't really think of a way around it, because the wireless ISP just routes any requests to their login page.

Haha Thanks man!
Raceer has a GPS unit coming my way.. So hopefully we can make some progress with that! It just really sucks about there not really being any good GPS software out there. I'll see what I can do.. But I reallly don't have a clue right now

Works AWESOME! man you rock... can't think of anything, well maybe one idea, the logo that is next to amp the symbol, you could make that red (no signal) or green (good signal) or yellow (weak or intermit signal)to show whether you're connected to a source, and then just add that logo (maybe smaller) to other pages to show connectivity. Or heck make it a guage that looks like a gas tank or clock or something to show signal strength that way
AWESOME job, I think since you figured that out so fast that you should have a GPS program nailed from scratch in say what? 48 hrs? *snicker* j/k, Great work!

Right, well that was my idea actually lol. I forgot to make that part clear . I thought it would simply be cool to use the same kind of icon as what airport does...

Actually you did mention that, but I don't really care for the airport signal strength icon, don't think it would look that good in AMP. but that's my opinion and I guess everyone has their own

floating menu
When using your program, I was missing some functionality. Is it possible, when using an external application through your AMP plugin page, to create a floating menu what stays on top of everything? (or a litlle button) So you wil still be able to stop a song or ajust volume? Maybe make a preference for it, to show a vertical or horizontal menubar. And also make the postion free to choose. Its just a thought. I don't know if it is even possible or the amount of work what is involved.
Thanks verry much for your AMP. Keep up the good work

You could make a request after connecting to something you know is standard (Google is touchy since they route based on the country of origin, but how about mp3car? ), then check the results against what you are expecting (use the header info rather than the body) and notify the user that it probably is a pay network.

Hey guys,, looking for opinions.. Where to put the "internet indicator" marker.. (for the main app)
I've tried top-left and top-right.. Those are the main places that has blank spots on every screen.. Does it look weird being to the right of the clock? It looks fine without the clock there.. but I can't tell how it looks with the clock. And on the left? I think it looks ok there too... What do you think?
Oh also.. What's the maximum signal strength you are getting? I top out at about 71-72 using a PowerBook G4, and I'm literally 3 feet from my 802.11g wireless router.

Looks Awesome! Exactly what I thought it should look like. I like it in the upper right, though my wife thought it would be easier while driving to see in the upper left, but upper right would be my choice. Also I would either disable during movie playback or make it an option to disable it during movie play back and or visual mode.
I have my G4 1.25 desktop on the other side of the house from the airport 802.11b and I get a signal strength of 35, while my neighbor's wireless shows up as 19
