G1 tethering over wifi

this might come to interest on people who like wireless. basically this turns your phone into a wifi hotspot so your carputer can have internet.

all credit goes to whom discovered this. i just found this on the web and been using it since.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480067

Talking

wow, I'm getting the G1 as soon as I can.

I got a BlackBerry with Tmobile and man. It's painfully slow on the edge network.

a friend of mine has Sprint an he connects that way.He connets the phone
through the Usb and internet sharing.
His average speeds are 127 kbs down and 93 up at speed test .net

I got Tmobile and I belief the G1 is the best Tmobile has to offer.

G2 is coming out in the end of march

i've been using this for about 2 weeks now.. he now created a .apk (application) so all you have to do is click wifi on or wifi off to enable or disable this ablity. works acutally fairly well.. i'm located in ny so 3g is very fast here and i believe that tmobile 1st 3g phone so the network is very smooth. i can stream www.nbc.com knight rider full episode with no problems! didn't do a network test yet but i will come back with numbers soon

I've checked into this. It's a cool idea, but AFAICT there is no way to limit who connects to this wi-fi hotspot you create. Plus, you have to install a hacked OS on the phone.

I got all the way up to the point of putting the files on my phone's memory card before chickening out. I just like the G1 too much to risk hosing it.

it's acutally not that hard of a process. if you are using rc30 downgrade to rc29 install the new bootmanager and that will prevent the phone from Brick! if it does you can just load in the old rc29 and restart! im using rc33 jf1.41. if you need help just ask me i've so far done it to about 4 phones and went without a problem. with the new radio update 1.14 you get better battery life!!! hehe that might motivate you

Does this mean I will lose all previous settings on the phone?

It would be helpful if someone posted a thread on how to hack the phone or a link to a walkthrough.

I'm acutally replying with my phone right now.. I will set up a tutorial and all the links when I get a hold of a pc. Sorry for the delayed reply.

Yes the rc29 - rc 30 uses radio version 1.12 while the new rc33 uses radio 1.14 honesty I feel no different in communication but now near my work place I got 3g instead of edge so maybe that's what the updat is?. No too sure

here is the tutorial i used to root my g1
