To put it quite simply:
The inverter's wave pattern is a square wave. batteries like those in laptops and cellphones and digitial cameras do not work well with the square wave that an inverter puts out.
The inverter can damage the laptop battery and/or the battery charging circuit inside the laptop.

This is a much better solution, as the auto adapter is made to accept the unregulated 12v from the car.
You could wire this directly to the battery if you wanted, and many members do just that.
