I think a xbox or car box section would also be a good idea:-) nothing about chipping more what can be done and whats being used.

Just last week I was showing my carputer to a friend and he started asking about putting a PC in his boat. He has a depth finder which outputs via serial port and he wants to tie that and a GPS into one system to map out the depths on the lake he frequently fishes. One of the problems he talked about no one has mentioned here and that is the shock forces that happen when running full throttle across the water. Boats don't have shock absorbers.

FYI: On the main forum page - underneath the boat section, there's a spelling error:
"So, you want to stick your car comptuer in your boat"
I was going to PM you Fiber about this, but it seems like your PM's are deactivated.
Thanks

I don't really use PM. My e-mail link should work though. Thanks for pointing it out.

Marine Specific issues
I am getting a list goign of Marine specific issues:
Brightness (look at your monitor on deck)
Ultra low power (for sailing across an ocean and only having wind electricity generation)
Dual monitors (Charting/Mapping/Productivity all on one computer)
Shock - High speed boats
Salt water corrosion problems
Marine Navigation/Charting Software

I have done some installs in boats in the past and my customers have been pleased with the out come.
I did notice while down at the marina that a lot of people are using car audio equiptment in their setups and everyone I talked to seemed happy with their installs.
I guess they type of boats you are installing these systems into will make a huge difference. The installation's I have done in the past were all done below deck using my standard product + a lot of silicon. The touch screens and monitors were all left below and I have not had any reports of failure.
The main use of these systems where internet access, video and music. I have not found a good nav program that I would want to install.
The deep cycle marine battery's hold a lot of juice enough to run an MII and 10.4" screen all day. Most boats have multiple battery setups + alternators to recharge.
Just my 2 cents

One other point to make is that boats cost big $$$ so people are willing to spend more on these setups then a typical car installation. There are plently of good day light visable touch screens avaiable if you don't mind paying $1000+ for a 10.4" touch.
My only concern with putting one of these outside would be corrosion

True, but doesn't the water act as a sort of natural shock absorber? I mean something skipping across water is alot different then the same object skipping across a hard surface.
I'm not saying it isn't an issue, just like shock can still be an issue in CarPC setups. I just enjoy analyzing this stuff.

full throttle across water hitting even small wakes is similar to hitting speedbumps at speed. While I just recently got into boats myself, 100Mph in a 16'8" flatbottom is one very rough ride... although this is on the very extreme side of things. this boat is not something that a carputer, or even a radio fits into, theres a lot of vibration just from the engine running. On larger boats this obviously isnt a problem. I think there is a lot of good potential for computers in boats and as previously stated boat owners generally have more money to spend so having more expensive and rugged parts shouldnt pose too much problem. good idea for starting this subforum. I added a pic just for fun.. this is at about almost 100

and the shock of a boat hitting a wave is like juming your car onto a tree trunk that hits the middle of the chassis at 30mph!

OOKIGIAJAN, but a boat section would probably be good. It at least helps consolidate all the info.
