I think before figuring out how you want to set it up, you need to seriously consider the huge issue of screen visibility... people have a hard time with it even in cars, with a roof and everything... on a seadoo you're most likely going to be in bright, direct sunlight a lot of the time, completely in the open, and to make it worse, water will be reflecting a lot of light as well. on a sunny day I don't think you'd be able to see a lilliput or xenarc display at all, let alone see it clearly.

I use my phone whilst waterskiing... well, I have it with me when water skiing anyway. it sits in an aquapack, which is basically just a pvc bag with a sealing top. in fact, I've put a camera in it before and submerrsed it totally down to 2m.

now no matter how much a seadoo flips, it will not go down 3m... if it does, then whatever happen would probably kill you!

Anyway, using some ****ty pvc, the unit can be sealed. but cooling will be another matter all together. I suppose you could do this however:

make all heat transfer to a single point (using heatpipes if you have to) and seal the seadooter with PVC. Just at the part where you've compounded all the heat, make a hole in the pvc and mount an aluminium/brass heatsink. imagine a car amplifer look. so the top would be the heatsink, and the bottom part would be entirely sealed. That way, you can mount the pooter (and you'd better mount it solidly) somewhere where there's lots of air, and be safe that air and water the pass it will only cool it.

h/d usage will not really be feasible. you can try, but I think it's pointless. u'd probably need some solid state.

for the touchscreen, that's easy to seal also using the same technique. like I said, I've gone under water with an aquapac with my pocketpc and camera, and they're both fine.

that's the theory... now... what the hell do you need it for?

i think the "because i can" reasoning.

besides that, there is no reason to put one in a personal watercraft. boats, maybe, but a seadoo? you dont need gps as you dont go very far. furthest id ever want to travel is from long beach to catalina island, less than 30 miles out. you dont need gps, you point the front of your craft towards the island, and go...

besides, a seadoo is all about being really close to the water... having lots of fun, you dont need mp3's when you are already having fun...

beyond that, its a cool idea, i just think the technical hurtles are too much for that "wow" factor. although if you did it, it would be a big "wow".

I liek the idea of a central heat sink, that would probably work best, that way you dont need to worrry about watercooling and such....

As for the screen, most likely you will need backlight enhancement as well as putting it in a shady place or something, Like some cars have it, resessed in the dash or something.

Can you post an image of the machine you want to put it in? Might help us a bit.

I hope this works... At one point I had plans for an old clunker to get marine rated speakers and put in a stereo set up for the floating happy hours at lake powell

But back to the thread....
Couldnt the screen be mounted in a fabricated housing under the handle bars? What is under that box just below it?

I assume the motor and all is pretty compacted in there as it is....is there liek a cargo spot where a computer could be crammed?

That picture is the same seadoo that I have. Here is what I was thinking of doing.
1. Relocate the gauge to the area below the handle bars (where it says gsx). That will leave me enough room to place a small screen there. Also the hood has a slight overhang to block the reflection of the sun.
2. Remove the front cargo container. This area stays dry even if the whole front end of the doo goes under water. I will build a small system using a laptop hd, slim cd-rom, small atx MB. I plan on contructing a small waterproof case that will fit in the bottom of the cargo container. There are 2 fresh air tubes that run into front of the hull. I can tap into these tubes to displace the heat from the cargo area and mount a large fan under the hood.
3. Mount a waterproof trackball beside the relocated guage.
4. Mount GPS reciever in the area between the handlebars and the hood.
5. Remove the glass from the side mirrors (those mirrors are useless) and fabricate waterproof speakers into the mirror mounts.

I am not doing this because of the "wow" factor. I really would like to have gps because I ride on some large lakes and the speed from the gps is more accurate than the speedometer. Sometimes like to listen to music while I ride.

Things that concern me:
1. Battery- I might have to upgrade the size of the battery for powering the amp,dooputer, and still have cranking amps
2. The chance of something catching fire. The cargo area backs right up to a 15 gallon gas tank

3. Running 60mph and being able to hear the speakers over the sound of the ski and the wind.
4. Amping the audio to a decent listening volume. I don't want it blarring out across the lake but I need to be able to hear it.
5. Quickly controlling the audio level and complete system shutdown for emergencies and getting pulled over by the patrol boats

6. Shock proofing the hd. I love to launch the ski off wakes and sometimes the landings are anything but predictable.

6. that will be a right pain to do. hard drives are just not made for that environment. perhaps using an arrary of compact flash cards? however if you must do it, then maybe have a mini water bed
