No you don't - you can download from Free Boating Charts save them in C:\Program Files\SeaClear\CHARTS,
then run MapCal II, go to Tools, Autoload list, Scan for new charts, and that's it. No calibration necessary.

I just downloaded Lake St. Clair yesterday, and it has the U.S. & Canadian sides, just like the chart book. I haven't used it on the boat yet, but in the car it tracked me down to the marina.

The only thing I don't like so far, is there's no way to get to the Zoom menu without right-clicking, which I can't do on my touchscreen. I may gut a mouse to get the scroll wheel and mount it next to the screen.

I just installed Coastal Explorer from Rose Point Navigation Systems. I am preparing for an extended cruise and have been looking for charts. Besides the US, I have not found anywhere that has free charts which has both ENC and Rastor charts available for download.

Coastal Explorer has a free trial download, it ties to both GPS and AIS. It accepts several different chart formats so the charts could be purchased and added to it.

OxiExplorer is great...

Look at OziExplorer. www.oziexplorer.com

You can use many commercial charts, or, my favorite, create your own from Google Earth images. You can get very high resolution of specific areas you boat/hike/drive.

Radar225 is an unknown quantity at this point
ok my original post was deleted and I was banned as a spammer so I will just give you a list of the ones I know:

CapTain Voyager v8 GPS, Noaa charts and AIS
CEACT GPS, Heading, AIS, ENC and Raster charts, Sounder
River Pro GPS, AIS
Coastal Explorer (good choice Evergreen) GPS Ais charts and i think even sounder inputs
Jeppesen not sure of product name but they are going to be at the work boat show in New Orleans and I was invited to check them out.

The Jeppesen software sounds very promising since I have seen the Avionics charts they have been doing for years from working in the Avionics field a while back.

Try checking out Digiboat's Software on Board package - it uses Cmaps so is limited but is powerful, flexible and cheap. http://digiboat.biz/

Software

There are only 2 good softwares out there for boating. Nobeltec Navigation from Jeppesen and Rose Point.

I do this everyday for a living on luxury yachts and have tried them all.

If you want a fool proof system go with a garmin stand alone system, furuno navnet 3d or a raymarine e-series

I like 'Chart Navigator Pro' by Maptech. Simple easy to use interface, many advanced options, touchscreen friendly in cruise mode. This program accepts all standard raster and vector charts.

I prefer to use vector charts as they are more dynamic and render better than raster charts. The charts I downloaded from NOAA.gov:

http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/ChartSer.../jsp/index.jsp

Sometimes it takes awhile because their server gets hit hard but I managed to get all the maps of all US waterways in a day.

I also tried out maxsea but don't like it that much. Nice interface but a PITA to load new charts. I hate any software that has to unlock, convert, or do anything complicated to load a map. I like software I can point to a directory and it auto loads all maps without complaining. Like Maptech.

We like Fugawi. PC based. Comes with US navigation. Ties into Navionics for internatonal charts.

Nobeltec Navigation

I work on Super and Megayachts installing monitoring software, and Nobeltec is the only thing I've ever seen actually in use besides paper. It's like Furuno for Radars or Nauticomp or VEI for monitors. There is no other.
