Analog out necessary?
As I have mentioned before we are working on our own HD FM/AM USB radio receiver.
We had always planned on using audio over USB to eliminate some the fuss related to analog audio integration and the hassles associated with finding another line input especially for those with satellite radio who might not have any more auxiliary inputs.
The reasons why we have wanted to go 100% audio over USB is:
Similar connection
Less clutter and connections on device
Less chance to introduce noise into the system
Some downsides are:
Less flexibly with connections - have to use it with a computer
Can anyone come up with a completing reason why we should or should not include the option to have an analog out? The analog out would be a set of standard 1 volt RCA jacks.
Ideally I would have liked to have the option for a SPDIF output, but that is not going to going to be possible for a number of reasons.

Pretty strong preference for the USB audio only I gather.

No need for analog. Optical output would be a nice option, but as you say, not feasible. So hurry up and get this thing out!

Just want to confirm, will digital audio be passed to the pc soundcard thru usb? Meaning can I just run fiber from soundcard's optical output to amp to hear hd radio...

Yes. All of the audio will loop through the computer digitally and out whatever output sound device (onboard sound, USB Sound, PCI sound card, etc) you have.
The idea behind it is that it will be much easier to connect because you won't have any have another input on your sound card. In addition it saving wiring clutter it also makes it impossible to introduce noise into the system. The downside is that it uses a small amount of CPU (just like any other USB audio device) but in our tests that hasn't been an problem.

Is having the analogue option going to make a huge difference in the build?

The first version is not going to have analog out. If we later determine a demand that justifies the additional cost we can revisit the idea. Thanks for the feedback.

The output on many motherboards is of fairly mediocre quality at best, and if you are offering an HD radio, then being able to take the output and feed it directly into an amp would be the best way to maintain sound quality.
Then again, most people are content with compressed itunes audio quality.

If a user was disappointed with the audio output of their onboard sound I would hope they would get a higher quality sound card or USB audio output device. I assume that most people would want to do more then just play the radio and want the ability to mix several audio sources such as such as mp3s, navigation voices, satellite radio, etc. The advantage of running it through a computer is that it can handle all of that cross fading, mixing, etc and then output a single audio stream. The computer does all of this digitally so there shouldn't be any degradation of the audio signal.
If you wanted to run the audio outputs from each device you have directly into your amp then you would have a amp with a lot of inputs and then manually toggle between inputs.
