You can see the product on display in the HD radio booth at CES this year. Ibiquity (HD radio) is very strict about what passes their certifications as far as tuner sensitivity and stability. Basically the device has to pass specs beyond what even most car manufacturers require. We have spent time with Ibiquity team this week and hope to have some progress in the near future. Sorry to be so vague.

The bad news is, it is taking a long time. The good news is it will be the most rock solid USB radio tuner ever built.

Can anyone tell me what the certification process is. I can't understand how it can take so long for a device to become certified.

Well i think no one here can answer my previous post. so i have sent an email to iBiquity. Working from the posts it seemed to me that the certification process has taken 5 or more months. Will post as soon as i get an answer from iBiquity.

P.S. I'm gonna feel like a real dick if the certification isn't actually done through iBiquity.

There are regulatory agencies that have to be satisfied. Depending on the product, where its going to be sold, and intended use it could be quite a few. Look on the label of most consumer products and you'll see a whole lot of those symbols for the various agencies around the world. Each of them implies some work required.

Ibiquity would most likely be involved directly only if their licensing requires some verification that their specs are being met.

How long the whole process takes depends on how smoothly things go as far as showing the product meets the requirements (e.g. scheduling tests at test labs, making changes if the product doesn't pass). I'M NOT SAYING THIS IS THE CASE HERE because I have no knowledge about this product. The regulatory agencies can be slow as well.

The biggest problem for consumers is when the makers start any kind of advertising or making announcements without letting the potential buyers know how long it might actually take before they can have one in their hands. Most estimates seem to be on the low side, unintentionally or otherwise.

Seems sad that I pretty much planned my system around purchasing one of these, and so far, it's a no go. Late summer '07... indeed...

..Still in the Certification Process

We are still working on it, however it is a bit closer.

iBiquity is needs to certify this product- I am not sure what kind of information they would provide regarding the certification process. Basically the radio needs to work in all kinds of environments, and if it does not work in just one, well then - you are out of luck. It has been a long process, but we hope to be nearing the end.

People have been waiting a long time - we have been dying for this product as well- so we are quick to give refunds if anyone would like one. You can just email the store with your order number. (but if you paid via credit card, then you were never charged)

There was a lot more black art in this project than anyone expected and when you have to collaborate with groups overseas, well you can imagine how that goes.
