What would be the best way to go abouts to switch the toslink?

it's simple.... the toslink is really just a fiber optic cable... it transmits the signal through light down the cable.... if you took the cable & sliced it real straight with a razor, & then kept the two ends aimed at each other, it would transmit the signal exactly the same.... this is how connectors work...

if you put the razor blade into your cut, the sound will be blocked(well, the digital signal that's being transmited as light will be blocked

)

there are splitters that can be used to build a switcher if your creative......

I can give sketch diagram if you want...

Absolutely.... On a scale of 1-10 how difficult is it to build this switcher?

For anyone interested, it looks like the 2 cheapest Alpine HU's that can control the H700/1 do not turn red. The 9885 I looked at does, but it doesn't control the H700/1. Sorry about that confusion. I think Pete was the only one looking for red, right?

The I-pod controller looking one still might do that, but we don't know right now. BTW, most of the Alpine HU's control the I-pod, it's just that one model looks and act's more like an I-pod and is missing the CD mechanism.

alright... I had a mockup I did in a cad program but don't have it now, I'll draw a sketch... it can be as easy or as hard to build as you want it to be, how much space do you have to work with? I always wanted it to be as compact as possible...

those knobs are pretty big, depending on how you construct it it can be as small as the size of a pack of cigarettes really... it could be cable actuated or a small actuator like a door lock actuator...I designed the one I was going to do with a tiny RC car motor, spun one way for a split second & threw the gate... b was reversed... it was latched to each side with a magnet, could also be done with an interference notch & ball.... there are so many different ways to make something like this... technically if you made it out of cardboard it would work, the rest is up to you & how much effort you want to put into it, it could be a pain to do also.. might be easier to find something to start with, like maybe a small plastic drawer & just cut a few holes.... it could be simple too...

Is there anyway to make the switch withought having to connect a power source?

something will have to move the gate.... I guess a cable or even a direct mechanical connection... maybe even one of those bigger knobs can work for you even?

But if i have a HU and PC i am still trying to figure out how to switch the inputs
