The PHA-H700 is the brain and controller. It was the only way you could buy it when they first came out. Later on, they decided to break them up into the brain (PXA-H701) and controller (RUX-C701).
The reason they did that was because they came out with new headunits that can control the brain part so some folks did not need the controller.
At about the same time they also decided to convert the buttons to blue only, at least for the US market.

Good to know man. SO actually, I'd be better off getting the H700? Are there any other major differences?

The H700's aren't made anymore. You'd have to get one used. The brains have a few tiny changes as far as a couple more dB SNR or something or was it that the processor was a little faster? I can't remember. Nothing that you could actually hear or tell a difference about. So they are basically the same. I think we may have talked about that in this thread. Turbo has both the H700 and H701 and said they were basically the same.
You know, I might be wrong about the C701 colors. I just found a pic of them lighted up. They all have the blue clear buttons (6 on left, 2 on right) but in some the 6 preset buttons are blue and in some those buttons look green. The MX button on the lower left is red only, but I have seen both red and green indicators to the right of it.
I took some pics of the inside of my controller in post 61 and I know we talked about this before somewhere in this thread.
I also have this small picture of a completely red controller that I know nothing about.
If you end up getting a blue one I might swap you for my red/green one. Mine will be hidden and I think I like the blue better anyway. Oh well, something to think about.

Damn....that red one is SWEET!!!! That is what I need, lol. Look at my car. It's getting a $15K job done on the interior right now, with tons of red lighting. That thing would look SICK in there. I need to find out about that, lol.
Which model do you have? I'll keep you in mind if I end up getting a green/blue one. I just found a brand new H700 on ebay...but the guy was asking too much. I sent him an offer. Maybe he'll accept it
And yeah, I was reading over the thread pretty much to get an idea on things. I caught omst of the stuff you mentioned in there too...just trying to get full clarification.....since all this stuff is going to be custom glassed in, there's no turning back, lol.

I have the H700 (red/green controller). I looked on ebay as well. That guy wants $900. Rediculous. You can get the 701 brian for $400 and the controller for less than $200. So that's only $600 or less. I bought my H700 used for about $450 roughly a year ago.
I'm re-looking into that red controller to see what can be done.

Thanks man. It would be great if I could find out how to do that. It looks like his back lighting is even red! But yeah....I told that guy his price was rediculous, and linked him to sites online selling it for around $600 brand new(yes...I actually found a fe, lol). But yeah man...if you find out how to do this in red, you just became one of my favorite people with a quickness, lol.

I haven't found anything yet, but it does look like Alpine made a few red colored HU's overseas. This is encouraging.
The CDA-9812rr and the CDM-9803RR. The last "r" indicates the display color as the CDA-9812rb has a blue display.

No, the point is that Alpine DID make some red colored units so maybe they also made a red version of the H700/1 controller as well.

Do you already have the CarPC? What do you have already? If you can go with a cool headunit, there are red ones out there. If you want to use the carpc and an H-700/1 you can simply tuck the controller away. That's what I do.

Yeah....I was thinking about doing that. But my car is pure show, and I would have to have the conrtoller visible, lol. And no, I don't have the PC yet. I catually have a WTB thread for that and some other stuff, and also just posted a thread of my project. Check it out.

I have a sound card question. I will be running the Alpine dva-9861 that controls an h701. I am planning to use the Aopen miniPC with the 945g chipset based motherboard that has an optical out for the onboard Intel HD Audio.
Is there any need for a sound card since the h701 will be getting an optical signal and doing the processing anyway?
thanks, barry
