I don't know but I got craptastic sony, and my onboard sound wins anyday

It just depends on what you're after. I'm not using on-board either, but it's equal or even better to a cheap HU.

just because you've seen this in one or 2 installs, doesn't make it universaly true... there are many variables, & onboard sound can sound better than a crappy headunit in some cases, especially if the pc happens to be very close to the amps & were talking decent amps...

one of the biggest problems with onboard sound is usually the extremely low voltages there driven with, but with a short run you can minimise noise pickup & with a good amp the gain control should be able to accept the lower voltage... it is not impossible to get halfway decent sound from onboard, but again, there are way too many variables to get into here.

I'm not saying onboard sound is great, far from it, but then again, there aren't many great factory headunits either

in the end, I would still highly recommend not using onboard sound anyway, a decent soundcard is the way to go...

heres a perfect comparison of how onboard audio sounds...

First you take a wire mesh bag of rabid cats...
spray acid on them and light them on fire...
lay under the bag and let the flaming acid drip into your ear...
string up a series of hand grenades next to your face to explode every 2 seconds...
have 5000 mexicans compete in a chalkboard scratching contest...
hire ashley simpson to sing...
have fran dresher scream the declaration of independance...
and take a big **** in your mouth.

thats pretty close to being as bad onboard sound.

hope i cleared that up for everyone. =)
