just because you've seen this in one or 2 installs, doesn't make it universaly true... there are many variables, & onboard sound can sound better than a crappy headunit in some cases, especially if the pc happens to be very close to the amps & were talking decent amps...
one of the biggest problems with onboard sound is usually the extremely low voltages there driven with, but with a short run you can minimise noise pickup & with a good amp the gain control should be able to accept the lower voltage... it is not impossible to get halfway decent sound from onboard, but again, there are way too many variables to get into here.
I'm not saying onboard sound is great, far from it, but then again, there aren't many great factory headunits either
in the end, I would still highly recommend not using onboard sound anyway, a decent soundcard is the way to go...
